Qu'est-ce qu´un driver (ou Pilote) ?
Les drivers (ou pilotes) servent d'interfaces
entre le système d'exploitation (Windows, Linux, Mac OS) et les différents
dispositifs qui composent un ordinateur et permettent d´assurer une entente
harmonieuse entre tous les composants.
Dans le cas des cartes graphiques, le driver renseigne le système
d'exploitation sur les différentes résolutions qu'elle supporte (nombre de
couleurs, fréquence, résolution, etc.)
Bien que les systèmes d'exploitation incorporent des drivers de
périphériques les plus répandus sur le marché, il faut savoir que les
constructeurs les modifient régulièrement afin d'en améliorer les
performances.
Souvent le désir de lancer de nouveaux dispositifs sur le marché avant la
concurrence fait que les produits sont vendus avec des drivers qui, très
souvent, comportent des défaillances susceptibles de déstabiliser le système
d'exploitation. Pour cette raison, les constructeurs améliorent et corrigent
les erreurs des versions précédentes et y rajoutent de nouvelles fonctions.
